Living with a Dachshund is a mix of delight and comic relief. They’ll follow their nose (and their instincts) straight into your heart—and sometimes your snack cabinet. They’re affectionate and entertaining but don’t mistake their size for simplicity. Dachshunds are willful and confident and need gentle, consistent boundaries.
That said, their loyalty is fierce. Once bonded, they’re yours for life. They love warmth, routine, and being the center of attention. Bonus points if you have a couch with a blanket they can burrow under.
• Bold, curious, and spirited
• Loves to dig, sniff, and explore
• Needs patient training and early socialization
• Big bark in a little body
• Prone to back issues—watch stairs and jumping
Dachshunds thrive in homes that let them feel secure, stimulated, and loved. They’re great for apartments or small spaces—as long as they get daily walks and nose-worthy adventures. They do best with owners who understand their quirks and don’t mind a little sass.
I’m small but mighty. I like long sniffs on the beach, cozy naps under the covers, and letting you think you’re the boss (you’re not).
• Needs stairs and high furniture monitored to prevent injury
• Loves puzzles and scent work
• Can be vocal without training
• Benefits from early leash training
• Not always easy to housetrain—consistency is key
• Ramp or dog stairs for furniture
• Cozy blankets and burrow beds
• Nosework toys
• Training treats (they’re food motivated)
• Low-pull harness
Dachshunds are determined little dynamos full of love and personality. With a bit of patience and a lot of laughs, they’ll steal your heart—and possibly your sandwich.
