Puppies don’t develop in a straight line. They move through stages. Some phases feel easy. Others feel chaotic. Most are temporary.
Use this guide as a reference, not a rulebook.
🐾 8–10 Weeks: Adjustment Phase
- Safe sleep setup
- Consistent potty routine
- Gentle exposure to home environment
- Short bonding sessions
- Calm crate introduction
Normal at this stage: 18–20 hours of sleep · nighttime whining · frequent accidents · short attention span.
🌎 10–14 Weeks: Socialization Window
- Positive exposure to new environments
- Meeting stable, vaccinated dogs
- Calm car rides
- Gentle handling (paws, ears, mouth)
- Building confidence
Normal at this stage: curiosity · occasional startle responses · growing independence.
🦷 3–4 Months: Teething & Testing
- Structured chew outlets
- Short, consistent training sessions
- Reinforcing calm behavior
- Managing environment proactively
Normal at this stage: increased biting · chewing household objects · zoomies · selective listening.
⚡ 5–6 Months: Early Adolescence
- Reinforcing training
- Tightening structure
- Clear boundaries
- Preventing regression
Normal at this stage: slower response to cues · testing limits · increased energy.
🔥 6–9 Months: Teenage Phase
- Calm confidence building
- Continued structure
- Preventing overexposure during fear phases
- Maintaining leash skills
Normal at this stage: sudden sensitivity · boundary testing · energy spikes · temporary regression.
🐕 9–12 Months: Emerging Maturity
- Consistency
- Reinforcing impulse control
- Strengthening recall
- Building reliability
Normal at this stage: gradual settling · longer attention span · occasional backslides.

- Persistent lethargy
- Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea
- Fear that intensifies instead of improves
- Refusal to eat for more than 24 hours
