What connects this family
Bull-type terriers share ancestry shaped by old bulldog strength and terrier athleticism. The modern American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Bull Terrier are not interchangeable labels, even when the public groups them together.
Many dogs in this family are intensely affectionate with people, physically expressive, playful, and ready to work. Their strength makes early leash manners, calm greetings, impulse control, and secure equipment especially important. Some remain social with other dogs. Others become selective as they mature.
